International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO)

 

The Hellenic Capital Market Commission (HCMC) and IOSCO

 

The International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), which is based in Madrid, is the main forum of international cooperation among capital market regulators and is recognized as the international agency responsible for the establishment of security market standards. For the time being, IOSCO has 215 members (126 ordinary members) from more than 100 countries.

 

In particular, the IOSCO members have decided, through their participation in the structures of IOSCO:

 

  • to cooperate in developing, implementing and promoting adherence to internationally recognized and consistent standards of regulation, oversight and enforcement in order to protect investors, maintain fair, efficient and transparent markets, and seek to address systemic risks;
  • to enhance investor protection and promote investor confidence in the integrity of securities markets, through information exchange, cooperation and supervision of markets and market intermediaries
  • to exchange information at global levels on their respective experiences in order to assist the development of markets, strengthen market infrastructure and implement appropriate regulation.
  • to provide mutual assistance to promote the integrity of the markets by a rigorous application of the standards and by effective enforcement against offenses.

 

The Members of IOSCO meet together every year at IOSCO’s Annual Conference to discuss substantive issues regarding global securities and derivatives markets. The HCMC is represented in IOSCO through its participation as an ordinary member in the Annual Conferences.
